The Carniolan honey bee, Apis mellifera carnica, is one of the two subspecies of the Western honeybee. Carniolan honeybees are common in American Apiaries. The other subspecies is the Italian bee. Carniolan bees originated in Carniola, Slovenia and surrounding regions. Common characteristics include: gentle disposition, winter hardiness and rapid build-up in the Spring.
